INSTAGRAM INTRODUCE NEW FEATURES THAT IMITATE TWITTER AND SNAPCHART

For the last six years, Instagram has been a repository for users’ most picturesque moments. But 2016 has been a year of reinvention for the photo-sharing social network, which has broadened what it lets people do with their images.

Now Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, is rolling out two more new features. 

On Monday, the company is unveiling one feature focused on live video and one on ephemeral messaging. Both tap into a type of sharing popularized in recent years by companies like Snap Inc., which runs Snapchat, and Twitter, in its live-streaming video app Periscope.

“We want Instagram to be a place where you can share all of your moments, to create a pressure-free space to do so,” Kevin Weil, head of product at Instagram, said in an interview. Mr. Weil said this philosophy, and the feature choices that stem from it, would encourage people to use Instagram for more than the selected, highly polished feeds for which it is known.

The new features thrust Instagram more directly into competition with Twitter and into a heightened rivalry with Snap, which is particularly notable as Snap recently filed paperwork to go public .

Instagram has steadily been introducing features to compete with Snap. This year, it unveiled a feature called Instagram Stories, which mimics a Snapchat feature called Snapchat Stories, in which people can organize their photos into a story line.

Instagram’s live-video feature will be released to a small test group on Monday; a wider rollout is planned for the weeks to come. The feature lets Instagram users broadcast live video to their followers through the Stories section of the app. Much as in Twitter’s Periscope, friends and followers watching Instagram live videos can comment and send cartoon hearts to the broadcaster during the stream.

But live Instagram videos are meant to be fleeting and cannot be saved to watch later. That gives broadcasters room to express themselves more fully, Mr. Weil said, without the added pressure of the raw video sticking around indefinitely.

Instagram’s other new feature, disappearing photos and videos within the company’s private messaging tool, will be available to all its users. While an ephemeral live broadcast may be seen by many, disappearing messages are for the few, usually friends or family in a tighter circle than the wider audience of followers.

Disappearing messages were made famous by Snapchat, which was able to draw a generation of young regular users. Snapchat rose to prominence in a post-Facebook era of social media, one in which people grew fond of the idea that their digital history did not have to follow them around the internet in perpetuity.

Mr. Weil defended the company’s move into ephemeral sharing and pointed to improvements and product adjustments that he said highlighted Instagram’s innovation with the format.

“The format is definitely something that Snapchat innovated on,” Mr. Weil said. “But it’s just like how hashtags started on Twitter and are used everywhere. I think this particular format is one that we will see adopted everywhere else.”

It has been an honour to manage such a magnificent club as Manchester United FC, and in doing so, I have fulfilled a long-held ambition.

I am immensely proud to have helped United win the FA Cup for the 12th time in the club's history. I have been privileged during my management career to have won 20 trophies but winning the FA Cup, which is steeped in so much history, will always be one of the most special achievements of my career.

I am very disappointed to be unable to complete our intended three-year plan. I believe that the foundations are firmly in place to enable the club to move forward and achieve even greater success.

I hope that winning the FA Cup will give the club a platform to build upon next season to restore the success that this passionate set of fans desire.

Having managed in Holland, Spain and Germany, I had always hoped for the opportunity to manage in English football and be part of English culture. Both of these experiences have lived up to expectations and been fantastic.

I thank my players and wish them well for next season. It has been a pleasure to work with them and it has been particularly rewarding to see so many young players take their chance to break into the first team and excel. I look forward to watching the continued development of these young players next season.

When WhatsApp finally got a voice calling feature last year it left us with just one question: when do we get video? There have been plenty of hints at its impending arrival, and now the feature has shown up in the beta iOS app. With Facebook in the driver's seat, it’s a matter of when, not if, WhatsApp video calling is coming.

WhatsApp appears to be testing a new video calling feature for its popular messaging app. Fonearena reports that the latest beta app for Android includes video calling options for some users. While WhatsApp users have been able to place audio calls for more than a year now, a video calling option would be an even bigger threat to services like Skype, FaceTime, Hangouts, and Facebook Messenger. WhatsApp currently has more than 1 billion users.

It appears the feature can be enabled or disabled on WhatsApp's servers, so the company can trial it with groups of testers. WhatsApp gradually introduced voice calling to Android users last year, with select users gaining access to the option in the weeks leading up to a broader launch. WhatsApp hasn't commented on any video calling plans yet, but it's possible the company may roll out this test feature in a similar way to the voice calling option. WhatsApp is also reportedly testing sending group invites through QR codes, links, and NFC tags.

Cameroon footballer dies after suffering suspected heart attack during Dinamo Bucharest match

Tributes from the football community have been paid to Dinamo Bucharest and Cameroon footballer Patrick Ekeng after he died during a match on Friday night having suffered a suspected heart attack, aged 26.

The midfielder collapsed during Bucharest’s 3-3 Liga 1 draw with Viitorul Constanta and was taken off the pitch in an ambulance before being rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A statement released by Dinamo on their official Facebook page read: "Dinamo tonight lost footballer Claude Patrick Ekeng Ekeng forever.

The sister of Patrick Ekeng, who died after collapsing while playing for Dinamo Bucharest, claims he said he was "feeling very tired" before the game.

"He told his best friend he was not able to play," Monique Chantal, Ekeng's elder sister, told BBC Sport.

"He said he was very tired."

She added: "Patrick was very generous, a gentleman. It is very painful he is leaving behind a family - it is like a dream, a nightmare."
